On one of our trips to the UK my wife and i Did a tour of this famous bridge going from top to bottom it showed you all the history of it it was very interesting .
As we lined up to buy our tickets one of the guys who i think was security guard came over and he spotted a NZ hat i had on and he ask me what part i came from and i told then he said he was a ex mn seaman and had sailed in the Port line and had been to Port Chalmers a few times he did tell me his name but i dont remember it
Not that i go around places i have been to inform people we are tourist

I've got a beautiful picture of Tower Bridge in the evening as my wallpaper on my computer. Keeps my spirits up that I will someday return to my birthplace. I wish I'd taken the tour of it last time I was in the UK.

Interesting you met an ex-MN man while "touring", Lou. There certainly are a lot of you out there.

I also went to Tower Bridge last September when on Holiday,it is most facinating to say the least!
I also did that open Bus tour which takes one around all the interesting parts of inner London1
Still a great City!

from the time it was first opened, the powers that be, in charge of tower bridge had a tug with steam up standing by, 24/7 in case a vessel went adrift and was liable to hit the bridge. i don't know if this was ever abolished

I recall back in the 1950s on General Steam boats tying up right alongside Tower Bridge at their seondary office at Irongate Wharf as it was then. now its an hotel and has been for years. You could almost spit down from Tower Bridge onto the decks of the ships, Used to be a game with the Customs ,coming in from continental ports, whether you climbed the steps up to the bridge road or continued under the bridge alongside the Tower of London to get to the underground with your few extra ciggies or docking bottle. Nearest pub was opposite entry to Tower. a touristy rather than seamans pub. Used now by ex MN attending Remembrance Services at the MN monument/gardens there in November/

Yes London is a very fasinated place to tour also HMS Belfast but there is one pub (no name) to keep out of unless you are gay

used to tie up there on MV Corncrake GSNC, Our Bow very close to the Bridge, on the Brandy Run, from Tonnay Charente, good times. Danish Butter Boats tied up opposite side of the River. most of those Customs were OK, Wink, Wink, was a case of one for you and one for me,

I was on a ship called Dartmoor, ref.to remarks used to get was How Long are you in for among others. Also a ship called Hollywood was open to all remarks but mostly towards the film industry. Trying to think of other weird names that the shipowner came up with. John Sabourn.
