    Prisoner in Brazil

2 Comments by David A Walker Published on 24th October 2018 02:28 PM
The story within our family tells of my grandfather, David Alexander Walker, while working as a merchant seaman, being taken prisoner during World War One with his shipmates and held in a prison in Brazil. I have searched the internet and other records and can find no reference to this. Can anyone help?

Hi David, Brazil remained neutral during WW1 until 1917 when German submarines torpedoed four Brazilian ships. Brazil declared war on Germany on 26 October 1917 and immediately began supporting the Allies until the end of the war. perhaps the ship he was on broke the neutrality rules and was interned prior to this - do you know the name of the ship he was on or even the Shipping Company which owned it.

Hi Chris, many thanks for your input. I have no further information on the event. I though possibly his name might come up somewhere on this site.
