    Default Women at sea

My Great Grandmother went to sea with her husband Captain Samuel Jones Master of the Aberystwyth Brig SOLWAY, It was her first voyage that we know of and she had her baby son with her and one of Samuel's brothers Arthur was part of the crew. The ship was hit by a storm at Saffi and driven on the rocks where she was a total wreck. Everyone survived. Family records do not indicate any further sailings by my great Grandparents. In 1914 my Great Aunt and Great Uncle sailed in the S/S LYNROWAN from Brazil to Liverpool when the ship was intercepted and sunk by the German raider KARLSRHUE. Great Uncle Arthur was Master of the vessel. it appears that back in the days of sail wives and families aboard ship were often the case especially on long voyages. I believe in some cases women became owners upon their husband's demise and they took more than a passing interest in the workings of the ship. I thought it was interesting to note that both my Great Grandmother and my Great Aunt were on the first voyage with both ending up shipwrecked.

Keith, thanks for adding the article. I wrote this some time ago with the hope of finding some kinfolk through it's publication but no luck.I hope one day to do a proper report of this family's maritime ties to Aberystwyth but data is slow to come in. My Great Grandfather as you know was the eldest of several seagoing brothers and he was the only one to have any children, none of the others did. I have yet to research the wives of these seafarers as I suspect some of them came from seafaring families. Sadly my Grandparents were divorced and I never got to meet my Grandmother so the collecting of data has been a long and slow process.
