    Smile First Trip/Fifties & beyond.

First trip LOCH GARTH of Royal Mail January 1948 as Galley Boy. Fantastic trip. Wanted to see rest of world so for next ten years swopped about a lot,one trip, one ship most of time. Second trip BTC tanker not so good but all experience, loads of great times, great mates and thirty years total at sea.

Vindi March-June 1949. First ship Stirling Castle. Stayed with Union Castle for about a year. Then on various Esso tankers.A spell on Joe Shell's Singapore pool. Then a year or two Home trade.Enjoyed that. In the pub almost every night. Finally came ashore in 1958.Did one or two different jobs before becoming a Bus Driver.Did that for nearly 27 years. Now a widower but otherwise happily retired.Quite glad I'm not a young man starting out nowadays. They haven't got the opportunities we had. I think we certainly had the best years. Glad there seems to be a fair number of us still around.Keep battling on Boys. D L T B G Y D.

I was around in the late 1950s . Does that count old timer ? Basic training at Vindicatrix , Sharpness . 1st ship the M.v. Alaric , home trade out of Tilbury dry dock to Hamburg and back . Rejoined for Aussie run docking at Melbourne , midday Christmas Eve 1958 . about 4 more years service left to see, prior to leaving . Varied ships served on various runs. Met John Prescott when signing on 1 ship !
