Product Description
Filmed over several months, this remarkable observational documentary series follows a diverse group of seafarers with different careers in the Merchant Navy. The Merchant Navys men and women traverse the worlds oceans in every conceivable corner of this incredible planet. In some of natures most brutal environments they carry out an array of remarkably diverse jobs: from the glamour of floating five-star resorts to the great engineering feats of the vast container ships; from exploring and delivering natural resources and providing critical support to the Royal Navy. It is, in short, one of the most important, exciting and rewarding careers on the planet. But the work of the Merchant Navy has never before been fully explored...until now. In this series, cameras follow the lives and work of an exceptional group of men and women, featuring the voyages of crew members on petroleum tankers, Maersk container ships and North Sea supply vessels, as well as potential new recruits put through their paces at one of the UKs elite training colleges. Well also be witnessing the birth of one of the biggest cruise ships in the British fleet: the colossal P&O super liner Ventura. Well follow her in the build-up to her maiden voyage as the painstaking finishing touches to her five-star décor are added, and a peerless crew is selected to help run an amazing vessel. The series celebrates the work of the men and women who keep our ships sailing across the worlds oceans. The Merchant Navy is full of tradition, but its also a modern, dynamic, hi-tech career and the programmes provide an insight into the work of the men and women who form Britains maritime workforce. At sea and on land, the programmes throw open their life and work in all its infinite variety: veteran sea dogs to college trainees; captains and engineers to cruise liners and cargo ships. Filming simultaneously aboard a number of different vessels, our cameras follow the experiences of a selection of core characters through laughter and tears, fair weather and foul, as we follow the extraordinary story of life in The Merchant Navy.
