With my normal searches i always use, so far he is not listed as in the Merchant Navy. But that does not mean he was not in it. There could be Record of him elsewhere??
Possibly try the Southampton Archives, in their Maritime Section.

If you had a family member who served in the Merchant Navy during the years 1918-1941 and want to find out more, please get in touch with us using the following contact information:

How to use merchant navy records at Southampton Archives
    Cheers

This is a Record of his Death at Sea when in the Royal Navy

I have also looked for his Records, but as he died at Sea i am not 100% sure if they would still hold any??

#10 The only reason I asked was because I knew a Charlie Crowe from Gateshead, he was obviously too young to be the person you seek but maybe of the same family. He had Irish connections through a men’s club in Ireland. However cannot ask him as is now deceased. He was an ex shipyard electrician and had plans to go with Bank line when finished his time, but instead married and emigrated to Canada and lived in London Ontario. We stayed a week with him on an around the world trip after I retired. He did the same with us stayed here for a week or so when visiting one of his daughters in Queensland. He did well in Canada and had his own electrical business , he was a good host the wife went to school with him. There is a Gateshead member on site and think I asked once before if he knew him but think the age gap was too big. JS…….

The Red dress uniform seems to have the same single stripe of a Junior radio officer, but looks like a military dinner outfit.

I would say that the first two photos are a First Class Dining room stewards uniform/rig, the second two are probably Second Stewards Liner uniform.

Yes Radio Officers had a wavy stripe, but that incorporated a loop on the single or uppermost stripe for senior or sole operators carried

I wonder would it be the Royal naval Volunteer Force, weren't they nicknamed the wavy navy on account of the wavy stripe

I would personally doubt it, all Wavy Navy officers had the loop (circle) incorporated into the single or uppermost stripe
