Searching my dad’s history
Hi all, thanks for having me on this site! Any help with where to start my search would be greatly appreciated. So far I’ve not found much, I have his seaman’s discharge book and his stories, I hear new ones every visit!
I’m totally fascinated by his life in both merchant navy and raf regiment.
Thanks
Gill

Re: Searching my dad’s history
Hi! My dad passed away this week and I’m keen to find out any more information about his merchant navy days.
His name is Raymond Lonie from Aberdeen Scotland. Discharge book no: R 728538, DOB 15/03/1936. He joined the merchant navy after 3 years in the RAF. Ships include Queen Elizabeth, MS WINDSORBROOK, British Adventure,Aragon London, British Lantern and MV Swan River to name a few.
I have heard so many stories about his time in the Merchant Navy, th replace that made him the man he turned out to be and saved his life basically.
I’d love to add more information if anyone knew of him?
Thanks
Gill Lonie

Re: Searching my dad’s history
Your father was only 10 months older than me and judging by his Dis A. Number he was an adult when he went to sea. Unfortuanetley his name rings no bells with me but hope it does with others. A list of all his ships you have may produce some recollections of the name. All the best. jS
PS your father would have been an ex national serviceman no doubt ? So may have entered the merchant navy under the DHU scheme which was originally set up for such. Sorry about your sad loss. JS.

Re: Searching my dad’s history
Further to the above from a reliable source…Raymond Lonie was known as Tony. Worked as a docker in Aberdeen from the early 1970s, when he was badly burned due to a drum of acid bursting when being loaded …..Taking from newspapers clips….Sub Headlines…Dockers Burned in Acid Mishap.
4 Dockers splashed with Formic Acid whilst loading the North Boat St. Rognvald at Jameisons Quay , they were Raymond Lonie (35) 12 Buchanan Road- burned on face, legs, and right thigh, the others were James Brown, William Leonard, Alexander Park, with all their pertinent information .
Suggest you try and produce more ships names if have any ?
If you want further information privately suggest you contact me on private line with your contact number for me to pass on to the searcher. This is the only information I have on subject , but looking at your fathers seatime would be the best way to go about this, as don’t think he was at sea very long , unless you know different ? All the best in your searches however and hope you or others can conjure up some good memories of him . Best of luck . JS

As said before besides what you already have , unless there may be some that actually knew of him, its hard to get much more .
The only other suggestion is to apply for his Crew lists, and also possibly the Voyage Record Cards for the Ships, which you have mentioned, there i guess will be others, those would be recorded in his Discharge Book. I say this as i did apply for my Voyage Record Cards plus my Crew Lists, and i can say that there was a lot of Info on them. Some interesting things indeed, as many incidents were recorded on the Crew Lists.
The VRC will give you the places he went to . Alos could be of interest
Good Luck.
Condolences for the sad loss.
Stay Strong!!
