Looking for info re Harold Wilson radio officer orient line pre 1945
Hello, I am looking for information regarding my grandfather Harold Wilson who was a radio operator on the Orient line up to end 1940´s. He sailed from Tibury to Australia but may have worked on other destinations. I recall stories about him being torpedoed twice and rescued after weeks at sea. He came from Croydon uk. I have a photo of rms Otranto on which he may have served. I don’t have any other info about him. Thanks for any return. Do you have crew lists of Orient line ships for this period?

Around 1880, I’ve never known this so it’s a guess.

Very hard to trace without a Birth Year at least. Only place that i can suggest is to look at the Southampton Archives ?? But not sure! The National Archives in Kew (A Personal Visit) may help as well.
Cheers

If had been THE Harold Wilson would have been easy to trace , as educated at Oxford spoke in a broad Yorkshire accent for his disciples but in private spoke with a plum in his mouth. For a previous poster the daughter of Captain Dunbavin he told me in confidence he had travelled in a buffet car in British Rail and never realised who he was due to his posh accent until they parted company at some station. #3 Katherine by the info. Sighted it would appear your Harold Wilson would have been a man at least in his 30s when joining a mercantile career . About at the earliest the Titanic era when ships radio was in its infancy. Have you checked with Marconi the main if not the only one of supplier of operators . I have a high regard for those who can assist you it is certainly out of my scope. But he must of had a working life also before he went to sea , have you no clues as to what ? Regards JS
