Default Advice on starting a new career as a Seafarer!

    Hi All!

I'm respectfully after some advice on possible routes into the Merchant Navy and this looks like the ideal place!

I'm a former Royal Marine (9 years) and Firefighter (7 Years) and have spent the last 12 years as an armed guard on vessels in the Indian Ocean, so I'm used to life onboard and spending long periods away. I would like to make the transition to become part of a ship's crew, starting as a O/S. I'm not looking at Cadet ships! I've got experience of working on Tug boats but would like to work on bigger vessels now. I've got the STCWs, VHF qual, British Seaman's book and planning to do my EDH course soon.

Can anyone offer a steer on companies which may be willing to give me a start as an O/S so I can get sea service?!

    Many thanks in advance!

    Cheers

    Rich

Richard the advice you want and need is from someone more into the modern day of shipping. Myself and most on this site will tend through age give you the wrong impression of todays shipping. You sound ideal for our generation , but is a different world today than what most of us lived through. Someone will recommend a crewing agency and may give you the address of such and would recommend that course of action . It is up to yourelf to sell yourelf to any would be employer and with your past working experience should stand you in good stead . The best of luck in your future wishes and hope they all come true. Richard, You could try Clydemarine although I think they mainly do engine and nav. cadets but they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Have you thought of North Sea oil rigs 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. Just Google agencies for North Sea work.
