#11, Me neither Vernon and the last 49 kept sticking!:smashPC: Thinking though it must be quite an old one saintlinesailor if you are 83 and the lady is elderly maybe there's a clue there!:)
Marian just pre war and after I can give you a list of 135 British Tramp Companies and that’s just the ones I know of , give me any letter out of the Alphabet and will give you the ones starting with that letter. That is only the tramps then there are the liners. Nearly every shipping company had their own cap badges and buttons . The only genuine MN uniform is the MN uniform by Royal Decree the others are livery. Cheers JS
Re#12, Saintlinesailor, Have to go out now but have had a good look around various sites and found nothing pertaining to MN cap badges apart from the wearer would have worn one related to the area he came from. [A step nearer perhaps!] In the link below scroll down to the bottom of the page where there are several Museum's to choose from which may be able to help guide you in the right direction on heritage clothing for Mariners. Hope it helps.:)

#13, Thank you John, if the Lady in question has any idea who the badge belonged to or where he was born it may give an inkling as to which Companies were popular in his home town? Outwith the 549 badges on the site Vernon suggested I also checked what was available from Google/Bing in the time I had and still couldn't find it. Don't mind having another look if anyone can suggest another avenue though won't be till late this evening.
There are some lovely ones out there, old and rather tattered and tell their own story.....
Take A an easy one as short….
Alcyone Shipping Co. Ltd. Ceased ship owning 1958.
Allan Black & Co.Ltd. Ceased ship owning 1966 and fleet sold to Chapmans & Willan Ltd.
Argonaut Navigation Co.Ltd. Fleet sold to London Greeks 1957.
Aviation & Shipping Co. Ltd. Sold to Junifex Ltd. 1971 , ceased ship owning .
It’s the same as nearly all of them they are all marked ceased ship owning .
Cheers JS
There are people on site who are members who worked for Chapman & Willans, do they know that their Bulk carriers 1964 -1974 were all sold to Burnett Steamship Co. Ltd. Of Newcastle on Tyne 1974 a subsidiary of Federal Commerce & Navigation Ltd. Of Canada
( having previously considering a merger with Common Bros. Ltd. In 1970. Restyled Burnett-Chapment Management Ltd.Ceased shipowning in 1975.
Cheers JS
Tung in cheek, It may have been from his daddy's private yacht .

Could be Sir William Reardon-Smith of Cardiff
Or even Cories of Cardiff . JS
Toss this one in the mix could it be a badge for a blazer, Perhaps the BUFFS?
