The form CRS 10 is held at Kew in piece BT 382/1933

You are most likely also aware that he also served during WW1 and in 1914 was aboard ARANMORE as 2nd Engineer. He also served in TUSKAR, ARANMORE, SANDA and PLADDA during 1915 in the home trade as Chief and 2nd Engineer. He has a WW1 and a WW2 medal file.
He has a CR 10 card with photo id taken circa 1918/19 and serving on PLADDA during this period. If you need the card let me know?

    Good morning Hugh.

I've booked my visit to TNA Kew and have listed documents BT 382/1933 and BT 381/2076 as those I'd like to see. Thanks for giving me that information.

I was aware of my grandfather's service during WW1 but details for that I've found to be even more opaque that for his service during WW2. I visited the Guildhall Library a few weeks ago and found some details of ships he served on pre-WW2 but nothing more. If you have the reference for the CR10 card you mention that would be great. He was 29 years old at the outbreak of WW1 and 54 years old at the outbreak of WW2, a photo of him in his younger years would be wonderful.

In his early years as a seaman, pre-marriage I suspect, he was on a ship or ships that sailed to Japan. My father had mentioned it and I have a fair few boxes of Japanese tea sets, vases, one or two bronzes and other ornaments. All I hasten to add made for the export trade rather than priceless antiques! All in all I think my grandfather was quite a remarkable man, probably no more remarkable than many many other merchant seamen who served during times of conflict, all braver men than I.

Really appreciate your help on this Hugh, thank you very much.

    Kind regards

    Douglas

For an account of convoy rescue ships see - http://www.historicalrfa.org/archived-stories68/1116-convoy-rescue-ships-service"

Also 'Convoy Rescue Ships' by Arnold Hague for the definitive account of the service.

Excellent accounts of the Rescue Ship Service. by Arnold Hague . 4,194 lives saved. So many War books ignore them. Unknown and forgotten. Still flying their flag !
One book. CONVOY PQ18 Arctic Victory, totally omitted the COPELAND from the list of ships in PQ18 Convoy. I despair.

    Hello,
THE RESCUE SHIPS ;- Already mentioned in post # 3.
Sir John Mc Nee only wrote the forward as he had an interest in the Rescue Ships. Sir Max Horton was a great advocate of the RS Service and my father (CAPT W.J. HARTLEY D.S.C.) was regularly called to Derby House when he returned from a Convoy. I have one of Sir Max' telegrams dated 11th Dec 1943.He would be asked to give an account of the voyage.
Lieutenant- Commander L.F. Martyn was also in regular touch with RS Masters as he was in the PSTO (Principal Sea Transport Office) Arnold Hague's book is great.

The RS Service was a War secret but I really can't understand why they are still ' brushed aside' now as there is so much good information about. It's a disgrace. The survivors and their families are grateful. I know this b/c I have letters from Survivors.
Sorry, folks. On my hobby horse again ! My Mum always said that you can't stand up for what you believe in if you are sitting on your hands..... I'm still standing !!
