    Default Hello from Wales

    Good Evening all,
Many Thanks for allowing me to join this group. I'm currently researching Merchant Seamen in Newport and Cardiff as part of an ongoing project to recognise their efforts.
Lots of family connections but just wondering if anyone got work with Bill Henke when he was in London (rather than Cardiff),

Also looking for people who may have sailed on the Knightsgarth out from Newport and/or individuals who may have sailed on the Velletia as we have lots of crew photographs.

our names were Bill/Willie Eversley and Benny Johnson. Benny Johnson crashed the Knightsgarth in Newport and took out the Jetty.

I'll upload more info soon regarding their numbers and ships but already finding some on here

#1. Looks like you are looking for people who sailed on the BISCO ore carriers, they are all aware of the Knightsgarth and such other ore carriers . I sailed with 2 company’s at different times on such , RS Dalgiesh on the Pennyworth and Ravensworth, and John I Jacobs on the Beechwood and Cherrywood. JS

#4.. Your iron ore ports in the Bristol Channel were Cardiff , Swansea , Newport , Port Talbot, Port Talbot in the 50’s and 60’s had depth restriction and lock restriction so took the smaller ore carriers, which think the Knightsgarth was . The iron ore cargoes were picked up in Russia, Norway, the Baltic areas , West Africa ,North Africa, South America , occasionally South Africa, Canada, BISCO in case you don’t know stands for British Iron and Steel Corporation , which was at that time run as a government industry in other words it was nationalised .It was a good earner for married British Seamen as the longest trip outside the UK was usually 6 weeks.
