Default Hello I first joined when researching Ancestry

Good Morning and thankyou, the forum very kindly sent me a 66th birthday greeting earlier today and this evoked earlier memories of my Ancestry research and use of this forum when in persuit of research information. I am not an experienced user when navigating and using a forum so please forgive any mistakes I may make when using and hopefully contributing to it. I thought over the coming days I could share some information about what I found out about the merchant navy service of my father Barney and uncle Charlie ( both deceased) who both served on Empire Ray from autumn 1941 onwards.

I am also saddened about the treatment of UK workers and their families by P&O.

Thankyou for your reply. I will have to spend a little time learning how to navigate and use a froum site, and also look again through my research work ( in biscuit tins) , but off the top of my head the initial information provided from members / sources on this site led me to the National Archives, Kew Gardens which I visited, and also directed me at the time to a number of websites which helped me to piece together and sift out the Atlantic convoys which both my dad and uncle Charlie were part of. My dad was medically discharged from Merchant Navy service during 1942, and then worked as a cook throughout the war at The Colsea ( "Cosy") merchant navy seaman mission on Upper Stanhope Street, Liverpool. Uncle Charlie was only 18 when he went to sea with dad, and served in numerous theatres for the duration of the war until discharged 1946 I think.

Many thanks for this information. Yes, I did end up finding information like this from a number of sources, but not as concisely presented as this - thankyou. Its been a while , 2 years or more since I looked over my findings but from the top of my head / from memory and this vessel was scrapped in the early 1960`s in Germany !. When I become competent using and navigating this site I can post a photo or 2 of the Empire Ray ( Halifax) with catapult to take a hurricane fighter as she was converted (together with a number of other similar vessels) to become an armed merchantman doubling up as a freight carrier, our quick version fix for a mini aircraft carrier and of course needed to be armed as well.I am originally from LPool - moved away 45 years ago, and so did a little more finding out about the single aircraft carried by other vessels like Empire Ray. The aircraft were usually clapped out hurricanes, and I think for a while US wildcats until the gap was bridged and sufficient built for service aircraft carriers became available to protect some of the convoys.Liverpool Airport is where the RAF personnel were stationed for these "hurricats"
