    Hi
My name is Barry Gentry. I was a Shell Deck Cadet from 1968 to 1972. Sailed on Heldia, Hydatine, Velutina and Achatina. Was in Plymouth Jan 69 to July 69 and then again for Phase 3 in January 71 to July. Was in Merrifeld then( 10 Queen Annes Terrace). Just turned 70 in December. Would really like to get in touch with some of my old shipmates from those bygone years. Thanks

Hi, Barry The Achatina pops up regular on this site i was in her in 1974 and another member who is a solid guy, Tony Taylor was also aboard her in 74 me and Tony either sailed in her the same time or just missed each other, Funny thing is the way your book used to get signed by the skipper when you paid off is more like a bloody doctors note yet the skipper of the Achatina is the only one i have that is very clear and readable Capt Wilkinson, Having said that i was on deck Tony was down below, And now we have someone off the bridge, I always remember she had a cook and a second cook and baker the baker was as black as the ace of spades but what a baker he was excellent none of us could pronounce his name even the skipper referred to him as midnight, Know one meant him any malice it was what it was, She was the best feeder i was in yet the only Tanker i sailed in i was more conventional cargo ships lets have some of your tales Barry there is a good mixed crew aboard this one { WELCOME } Terry.

#1 Yes welcome Barry you may find some of us aren’t up to speed with the likes of this phase which I assume is some sort of educational process. As regards Denis O ‘Shea #4 post don’t let him fool you , he’ s a wily old bird going way back, you may of been in contact with R/0 s in your time ? But it was a sad day when they became extra to requirements , and were all part of the demise of the Merchant Navy. Hope you find many ex shipmates on site. Cheers JS

    Hi Barry
Welcome to the site, plenty to peruse that will bring back memories. I was mostly a tanker man, mainly BP, then the NZ coast where the food improved ten fold.

Barry, did you ever know another shell deck cadet from north Shields by the name of ken duff? He served his time in shell during the same period as yourself, after shell be joined Bank line before emigrating to Australia. He was a friend of mine and we met when we were both doing 2nd mates at South Shields college.
