hello from David Ogden
I'm researching my relation Charles Henry Calder, AKA Charles Henry Jones, Chas Jones . He was born in 1882 in Liverpool but sometimes says he was born in 1886 in Dublin. He was a ships painter. I'm keen to find out more about his experiences in WW1. I do know that in March 1917, when he married in Belfast, he was a painter on HMS Mantua, an armed merchant cruiser. Family lore suggests he claimed to have been on another ship that was torpedoed. I'd love to find out more details. I found a post war application where he seems to be applying for medals such as the Mercantile Marine Ribbon (certificate of discharge no 906974).
His sailing days started before the war. He sailed to Australia as an assistant steward, on the Empress of Britain.
Ideas for further research gratefully received.

Thanks Marian
All good and here is the actual Documents for his Medal Card

I think you will find his Full Record of Service in the Form of his CR10 (Not CRS10) at the Southampton Archives. Email them and ask!
Cheers
Central index of Merchant Seamen (southampton.gov.uk)
Series IV/Central Index Register (1913-1941. Unfortunately entries between 1913 and 1918 were destroyed in 1969. The originals are held at Southampton Archives with copies available at TNA in series BT 364 as a combined index of the CR1, CR2 and CR10 cards)
Series V/Central Register of Seamen (1942-1972, TNA series BT 382)
