    Default Bowater Steamship Company

Hello, I am David Hambley from Liverpool. I sailed as an electrician on the Nicholas and a few of the small motor ships from 1960 to 1965. I understand its a long time ago but they were happy times. Does anybody remember me or was around in the fleet at that time

Hi David. I never sailed with Bowater SS Co but their ships are why I joined the MN. My father was in the insurance department for Bowaters and covered the overseas and marine sides. I can't remember the exact year, perhaps 1960, but the Sarah had been involved in a collision in fog and arrived in Northfleet with superficial damage. My father had to visit the ship on a Saturday and took me with him. He sat with the master whilst I was given a grand tour of the vessel. A little while later the Nicholas was in Northfleet and my parents and I were invited aboard for a party. I believe the master was Capt. Bosanquet (sp?). After those two visits I was determined to join the MN which I did in 1964. I joined a tanker company and life on board couldn't be further removed from what I had witnessed on the Bowater ships. Water under the bridge so to speak.

    Hi Dave
i worked on Bowater ships including the old 'Liverpool Packet' as an apprentice with the London Graving Dock Co. I went to sea with the NZSC. In 1963 i was 3rd engineer on the 'Rakaia'. We were berthed next to the Nicholas Bowater over Xmas in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. We had party's on both ships and one ashore, best Xmas i ever had! I remember the Lecky well as a year or so later i joined Buries Markes 'La Hortensia' as 3rd engineer and the Lecky was from the Nicholas Bowater. Was it you.

I met a young lady in Cornerbrook who wanted me to jack in uncle joe and join Bowaters so I would get in to Cornerbrook more often; would have been bored with that so didnt

Knew one young lady there whos father made Screech.
It made for a good relationship, until her father found out that I was taking advantage of his daughter and his booze. Think it was the latter that upset him more.
