Parents
Hello all, my parents were both in the merchant navy, mum joined in 1950, she faked her age as she was only 20 at the time, I know she sailed on the Winchester Castle, The Rangitiki and Rangitoto as a laundress.
Dad joined shortly after when he left the Royal Navy, I know he sailed on both of the Rangi ships, but I’m not sure of his others, he I believe was an electrician, although I seem to recall him also working in the engine room. They married in East Ham in 1956. Their names were Michael Magee and Daphne Bluck

Re: Parents
Yes that’s mum, dad was born in 1931 in Manchester, he did 2 stints in the RN, the first in about 1948 till 1954, then he rejoined in 1957 till about 1959 when they decided they didn’t want him anymore and demobbed him off in Iceland to make his own way home ooops. Thank you for finding her, I live 10 minutes away from the public records office in Kew

Re: Parents
Was it his National Service he did in the RN . If I remember you could volunteer for that, but you had to do longer than the regular 2 years. He would have been given the option at. 18 . So maybe went that way by choice.
This sounds about right for the 6 year period . The navy people on here will know what the regulations at the time were . I and many like me had to register at 18 but had been at sea over 2 years then and was classed as a permanent seafarer. If however I had chucked my seaboots away before I was 26 would still have been eligible for a suit of khaki. I may. Be wrong but believe apart from joining the RN at 15 as a boy seaman, normally was joining at 18 for 12 years , and had to do 22 years as an adult rating to be eligible for any kind of pension. The short time your father did makes me believe it was a special concession put there for would be national servicemen. JS

Re: Parents
John, it was after the war when conscription was still ongoing until about 1960 or so that so many 'alternative' females joined the MN.
I think it was that if you did two years you would not be called up!!
Happy daze John in Oz.
