I am pretty sure that in the 1950,s when I sailed NationalService, ie., “The Draft” One was in for 18 mths minimum. If joining
Merchant Navy one could be “ Called Up” if left before completing 10 yrs. Sounds draconian so probably got it wrong but I believed it at the time. I also understood that if one volunteered it had to be for a minimum of three years in any of the three services.

Looking at the Transvaal Castle and recalling some of the UCL crew, the WOKE persons of today would most likely call her Transgender, or Transvestite Castle.

Yes that’s mum, dad was born in 1931 in Manchester, he did 2 stints in the RN, the first in about 1948 till 1954, then he rejoined in 1957 till about 1959 when they decided they didn’t want him anymore and demobbed him off in Iceland to make his own way home ooops. Thank you for finding her, I live 10 minutes away from the public records office in Kew

Well as this Thread has been replied to again i have again looked at the Archives and am sure that this is the person in Question. Born 1931 Manchester. So this is the Link for his Seamans Pouch. Would also ned his CRS10 for his full Service in the Merchant Navy
