To be honest I’m not sure, he was orphaned at quite a young age and sent to the Isle of Man to be raised by his grandfather who he hated. He managed to get to sea on a fishing trawler to Iceland at I believe 14, then into the RN after that. It’s now that I’d wished I’d listened more when it’s too late

They had houses in Cheshire, Kent, North London, Essex and East Sussex, I don’t think we spent more than two years at any particular school, I don’t think either of them ever lost the wanderlust

My dad had ideas of me joining the Army!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bought me a set of boxing gloves said it would help, help what?

So I left school and a few months later joined the MN.
He was not too happy as he said mum would miss me, well in the army she would not????
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Hi Keith, I was more wondering if anyone remembers them. I realise it’s a very long time ago but you never know, I do recall dad saying John Prescott had been on one ship at the same time.

Thanks Tracey, initially possibly Doc our site senior moderator may be able to change the thread title to
something like: Michael Magee and Daphne Bluck or Did you know Michael Magee or similar.

    Fingers crossed for you.

    Regards,

    Keith.

I am pretty sure that in the 1950,s when I sailed NationalService, ie., “The Draft” One was in for 18 mths minimum. If joining
Merchant Navy one could be “ Called Up” if left before completing 10 yrs. Sounds draconian so probably got it wrong but I believed it at the time. I also understood that if one volunteered it had to be for a minimum of three years in any of the three services.

Thought it was only two years.

Yes John Prescot, two Jags, was at sea spent some time on Manchester Liners.

National Service was 2 years. 'Joining up' was minimum 3 years, but with a proviso that you also went on the 'Reserve' list, which meant you could be called back anytime in the next 10 years, this latter proviso was the reason many did not join up to get the extra pay above NS. But then there were others like my sister and brother in law who signed up for 16 years with an option for 22 years, now that's what I call faith! both ended up with good pensions
