Re: New Member just saying Hello
My father ran shops in Park View, Whitley Bay in the 60's/70's. TV, records, toys, models, prams etc. so he looked forward to the Glasgow weeks, customers looking for something to spend their holiday money on. . I remember he would only give them 19s/6d for a Scottish Pound note because he had to bundle them up and take them to the bank to cash, paying a fee. I remember he had quite a few rows with Glaswegians about it. More expensive items like TV;s were priced in Guineas which meant 21 shillings as opposed to 20 in a pound which was worth another row. Hi Roy have recollections of your Dads shop in w/b I finished up before leaving in Whitley lodge estate behind the Briardene pub. One of many school jobs was Todds the butchers in Park view and Albert Bolam the cobblers up Norham Road. Apart from paper shops galore , must be why I am so anti newspaper .bought my first new bike in Lavericks bike shop opposite your dads shop. With the proceeds accumulated from my labour’s .Attended Park and byegate schools and 8 months at South Shields before apprenticed to Runcimans , just come in from bingo and won $280 on the raffle so a bit under the weather from a bit more consumption than normal. See you live in another of Gods countries . Speak later hopefully . All the best . JS

Re: New Member just saying Hello
Since the start of the new Snowy Hydro Project here they have levelled all the roundabouts, before they were filled with flowers, now just a very small raised hump, as the massive trucks carrying the stuff to the Snowy's can drive straight over the, thankfully they are only on the road after midnight.

Just offhand!
In the Orange Free State in South Africa there are only Roundabouts , no Traffic Lights at all. Seems to work like a charm too.
I guess though that there are many other places that have similar!
Cheers

#48. Think the correct term is sleeping policeman Victoria. Not a dead cop you must have spent too much time in the States .Cheers JS.
PS the actual raised level of the ground is the deterrent , the light on top is to tell you that a tired and stretched out policeman is underneath .JS

We have speed bumps here, repair men love them as over time they wreck the suspension.
But for the hons they are wonderful, how fast can you go over one and how high si the car off the raod when you hit it.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: New Member just saying Hello
double that if you go round every roundabout Victoria. JS
Victoria for a rough estimate for any distance like in the UK where it is mostly North and South you can get the latitude off an Atlas so an easy way to measure the mileage is say going from 51 degrees to 55 degrees is a difference of 4 degrees x 60 is 240 nautical miles A nautical mile is 6080 feet, for your latitude in degrees and minutes just remember 1 minute equals 1 nautical mile. that is for going North and South and as the bird flies, so going over roundabouts instead of around them you are saving on your petrol consumption at least. Cheers JS

Re: New Member just saying Hello
Victoria, we hired a car in Ireland and until you have driven there you have no idea what it is like.
A lot of time is spent driving in the ditch at the road side more so when the farmer and his tractor is coming head on.
We hit one bit which took the underside of one front wheel out, the underside covering that is.
Put it in the trunk where it was when we returned the car, said nothing.
Two years later at the same hire company not a word said.
But they do not like yanks who hire cars there.
They only drive autos in USA, many of the hire cars are still manual.
Many come \back with stuffed gear box and clutch.
Happy daze John in Oz.
