    Default Hello

Hello, my name is Roland Bradley, I first went to sea on the 4th of October, 1950 at the age of 20, one month short of my 21st birthday as a 7th junior engineer on the SS Benalbanach from Southampton to South Korea. I stayed on SS Banalbanach until 1952 where I left with the rank of 4th engineer.
In 1996, I had the pleasure of having a seven-hour sail on the liberty ship, Jeremiah O’Brien at San Francisco. It brought back many happy memories of my time when I sailed on a liberty ship called the SS Sandsend years earlier. I’m getting a bit long in the tooth but I still have a passion for steam turbines and reciprocating engines.

It’s really nice to read other people’s stories about their times at sea and how they have enjoyed it as much as me.

    All my best wishes,
    Roland Bradley.

Greetings, Roland. I also sailed on a Liberty - Brocklebanks SS Malabar, ten paces and I reached the wireless room and was at work.

She's handsome and well maintained. I wonder if other examples survive.

There is another preserved Sam boat in Chesapeake Bay area,
JOHN W BROWN, She also does cruises in the summer, a couple of years ago she went up the St Laurence to Montreal..
I also went aboard the JEREMIAH O`BRIEN in London when she came over for the 50th anniversary of D DAY, 1994
A friend of mine went and asked the Captain for a job and he helped to sail her back to San Francisco, I should have done that,
I sailed on the SIMON B ELLIOTT in 1959/60 of Blue Funnel.

    Cheers

There is another Liberty preserved in working order in Greece, believe it is in Piraeus, but could be another port. As the Liberty was an evolved design of a British design naturally we didn't bother keeping one!

Hello Roland , You say that you sailed on the ss Sandsend you must have been working for Headlams of Whitby ,
My dad Tom Feather was on the ss Dunsley from 1946 to 1950 as deck apprentice and then the ss Fylingdale
till the end of 1951 did you ever sail with him ?

Thought there may have been a tenuous connection, but dates differ, my father was on the 'Fylingdale' from 14.07.1947 until 29.09.1948
