    Default Searching for father’s records

Hello, my father Frederick Donald Ayre was in the Merchant Navy and during WW2 he was T124x which I understand signifies that he served as a merchant seaman on Royal Navy ships. How would I find his service records? Many thanks

    A quick hello.

Can you possibly give some more info?

Date and place of birth, did he survive WW2, did he return to the MN, any identity numbers etc etc.

    Regards, Keith.

Hello, his date of birth is 24 March 1919, place of birth was Cardiff. His service number is R168210.
He joined the merchant navy I believe in 1937.
He survived the war and returned to the Merchant Navy until discharge, although I am unsure of those dates.
    I hope this helps. Jayne

    Hello Jayne
His Seamans Pouch which will only hold basic info is available at the National Archives. But you will need his CRS10 for his full Service Records.

    Pouch is at

    BT372131/11

As the site address is showing insecure i cannot copy and paste here. May need to send you Private Email later, also will include his CRS10 Link .
So look out for Email please!
    Thanks
    Doc

Thank you so much for this, I shall have a good look at it. I tried to get his record through the Royal Navy, but am waiting to hear back as I was told that as his service number started with R he was merchant navy. I let them know that he was T124X and am waiting to hear back.
    Regards, Jayne

Thanks for the update, wish you well.

Hopefully, you may still look in lest someone adds more and
it would be both of interest and helpful, if you tell more of the
    your findings later.

    Regards,

    Keith.

As he was T124X could well be that he only carried the R Number, although serving aboard Naval Ship, but in any case there should be Records of his Service on those RN Ships.

    • The T124X records detail the sea service of merchant seamen who served on Royal Navy ships (or Royal Navy auxiliary vessels).
    • Information is contained in pouches and includes personal details such as name, age, rank, rating/grade and qualifications, together with details of the vessels on which the individual served.
    • So looking at this info seems that you may be lucky once you get his Pouch from the NA , ???
    • Seamen's records ('pouches') are in: BT 372 ( BT372/131/11 )

https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ils/r/C8154453 Seamans Pouch Link (Safe )

    https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C10990275 CRS10 Link

As the Pouch may contain info as stated above, then possibly his CRS10 would also have RN Service details ,as those are a far more informative Document!
Good Luck ,keep me posted on results please!
    Thanks

Hello, just a quick update. I have heard back from the Royal Navy and they are able to provide me with his service records, but advise that this could take up to 8 months.
    Many thanks, Jayne
