    Post Hi

Hi, my name is Shirley, and I happened upon this site by chance a few weeks back (I have only just plucked up the courage today to type something and say hello). I'm the Great Granddaughter of a Merchant Seaman called William Rae who was born in 1888. I started researching my family tree in 2004, and at this time, I knew my Great Grandfather had been a Merchant Seaman but not much else. Registry House in Edinburgh put me in touch with the Mariner Museum in London who later contacted me with information that my Great Grandfather had died off the coast of Spain in 1951 aboard the ship SS Tourmaline aged 63. This year 2020, I restarted my research of my Great Grandfather, this time my research has proven to be quite fruitful; it has lead me to find some of his Registration Cards, with his discharge number, the names and or numbers of the ships he worked aboard. There is a registration card with around twenty ships numbers written down) and a brief description of eye and hair colour. I also found out that he was a fireman/greaser on these ships and mostly travelled within UK ports, there is also some evidence of him working on ships in Canada too. It is my hope and dream to find a photograph of him as the family does not possess such an item; until my research, my family had no records.

    Bye for now
    Shirley

    Hello Shirley
Yes his Recorded date actually is August 1950 on that Ship according to the Archives, but another does list as 1951 ?
    Archive Ref BT334 Box 0109 Deaths at Sea 1891 - 1972

As for a Photo, well unfortunately as he died at Sea Other Records are hard to find, and a Photo is very unlikely to be in any ? Sounds like you have his CRS10 Cards ?? If you do have this then it should have shown on reverse a Pic?? ( The reverse of the CR10 card has a photograph of the seamen with numbers and names listed. Those are the names and/or Official Numbers of the ships on which the seaman served. The number on the actual photograph is the Seaman’s Ticket number as seen on the front of the card) Do any look lie this ?? Could you upload the one with the Ship Numbers? And what was his Discharge Number please!
But who knows. I will look around and if anything comes up will surely Post
    Good Luck
    Cheers

If you are interested in the names of the Ships post the Numbers and i will look them up, well those that i can anyway
    Cheers

With the names of the Ships , once found one could then see where he went in his Travels which would be interesting(Port Names that is) with Ships that are available at the Archives during the periods !
So will leave it with you Shirley

Hi Keith, Thank you for the reply. My G Grandfather was born in Lanarkshire from one of his C1 cards it states he was born on the 4th of August 1888.

    Hi Doc,

Thank you for your reply. I appear to have a few of the C1 cards and one or two of the C2 cards (I found these by chance on the Find My Past website this year)but I have been unable to find a C10 card as of yet. His Discharge number is R30939. From the card I have uploaded I have found a few of the names of the ships on the CLIP website (I'm a novice and found this by accident too ) as follows:

    105262-Roman Star, 119697-Mamari, 139098- Devon

I'm in the process of putting together word documents for each ship and stating the date when my Great Grandfather may have worked on them, where the ship was built, who owned them and some features of the ships. This is for my own records, I plan on making a separate binder for these.

I have cards for Empire Snipe-167585, Geraldine Mary-151629, Thala-160623, Cape Sable-164068, Andalucia Star-149782, SS Warkworth-148105, Fendris-147949, Harmattan-161438, Coronda-110533 and finally Marquesa-140586 (on the Find My Past website this final card has arrows at either side of the image, as though there is more to view. However, when I click these it comes back with an error message).

    SS Warkworth.jpg

    Thank you

    Shirley
