    Default New crew intro.

Hi all, thanks for accepting me in this forum. I have been collecting South African Navy items for over 15 years after nearly completing the field I started on other navies (RN, USA and Dutch). I was given a few Merchant navy cap badges which started me on this "new" field of collecting. So far I have rank boards and about 50 MN cap badges. I hope to give back info on various navies as required and to get info on the various MN ranks and cap badges.

Vernon, many of us who went to Cape Ton made collections.
Some times it was the local ladies, my mate collect the white sailors hats the yanks wore. Though to get one he had to run faster than the head he pinched it off.
But for most o us I think it was the empty Oudermiester and Mellow Wood bottles, sorry about the spelling.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Welcome Neville if your collecting MN memoribla think 50 cap badges still have a long way to go as nearly every company at one time had their own, plus buttons and braid. The standard uniform of the MN is well known but a lot of company’s and ship management company’s went outside these parameters and issued company uniforms in grey colour , Whitco Marine was one , although issuing free gratis to their crews can never remember receiving a cap badge , so can never remember wearing a cap whilst employed by them. The term Commodore often appears on this site , it is a naval rank below admiral . When in the MN vocabulary it’s title simply means senior master in a company. Good hunting. Whitco Marine was a subsidiary of Salens and there used to be at least a couple on site who had sailed with. Regards JS.
