Looking for Grandfather- James White
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to locate information on my grandfather. He said that he was in the Merchant Navy. I'm at a loss and hoping that someone here might please be able to help. I'll list the details I know of him below. I would assume his service was prior to 1925 as he was in Canada by then and married my grandmother in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately we can't even find a birth record for him.
Name: James White
DOB: 1893 Oct 10 Place of Birth: Newcastle upon Tyne, England
DOD: 1980 Aug 6 Place of Death: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Parents: James White & Elizabeth Foster
Siblings: Beatrix White (Missionary)
I thank-you for looking at this and I have my fingers crossed for any help or hints that may assist me.
Thank-you
Debbie MacNutt

Re: Looking for Grandfather- James White
Debbie may confirm the records are correct,
they can be wrong, not impossible but eg:
Mother's Name:
Elizabeth Foster
Spouse's Name:
Maud Ida Foster
Need to ensure all inc DOB are correct.

Re: Looking for Grandfather- James White
That would be my grandfather .. I submitted that photo to Vintage Toronto in 2019. And yes my grandmother was Maud Ida Foster. They married in 1925, I have a copy of the marriage record on my Ancestry account. I'll try and upload a picture when he was younger.. if I can figure it out.

Re: Looking for Grandfather- James White
Is this where you have all info from and could there be an error? pos
Maud Ida Foster: bride and Elizabeth Foster her mother ?
DOB and place of birth are essential, can you confirm all?
Where did he meet Ida, did they travel together or was the wedding soon after his arrival in Canada?
Keith.

Re: Looking for Grandfather- James White
Hi, thanks for the replies.
The information I have regarding Date and place of birth (Newcastle) and that he was in the Merchant Navy have all come from my mom. Who got it word of mouth from my grandfather. The only other record is the Marriage record, already mentioned above, to my grandmother.
My mom once tried to get a birth certificate for my grandfather when he was in the hospital with Alzheimer's. But they couldn't find a record for him. Funny thing was that when he was in the hospital in claimed his name was Jimmy Johnson... but that could have been the Alzheimer's talking.
I appreciate all your efforts. It's been near impossible to research his side of the family since I can't confirm 100% any records .. I've even tried to do it through his sister. But again I haven't been able to confirm a record for her either.

My grandparents met here in Canada, We thought it was strange that his mother had the same last name as my grandmother but her mother was Polly Davis Cocks
I really can't confirm much in the way of details .. as we can't find records for him.. and most details were by word of mouth.

Re: Looking for Grandfather- James White
Can see a James White in a photograph upon the Trillium Ferry in Toronto itself, born in Newcastle. The other photograph shows a young man around 30 ish with a wedding band on.[/QUOTE].
I'm curious about the second photo you mentioned in your post... though I think you may be viewing photos I've uploaded to Ancestry etc.
Thanks Debbie
