Hello & searching...
Hi everyone,
Hope you are all doing well in whatever state of lockdown you might be in, wherever you are in the world.....
I am looking for information on my grandfather, specifically the ship that he came to NZ on, which may or may not be a merchant navy vessel.
Here's what I know:
William John Lyness
Born 19 May 1901 in Belfast - county Down
Enlisted on the HMS Vivid 1 in 1921
There's a number SS11693 on his enlistment record.
He came to NZ in the 1930s probably, and he came through the Suez canal. I'm pretty sure he was still in the merchant navy then.
Does anyone know how I can find out more information on his service record, and especially what ship he may have come to NZ on?
Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Hello & searching...
Seems that there may be some info at the NZ Archives
That Number you quote looks like it relates to a File in the Archives SS11693
Dates of Holdings : |

Location of Holdings : |
|
Archives New Zealand, Head Office, Wellington |

Services are currently Suspended due to the Corona Virus so you will have to wait till all is back to normal.

The National Archives in Kew London also should have lists from the UL to New Zealand by name.
This Office too is closed for research as far as i am aware till the Virus issue is Totally resolved
Outgoing passenger lists (1890-1960)
Search and download (charges apply) lists of passengers leaving from UK and Irish ports and travelling to places such as America, Canada, India, New Zealand and Australia between 1890 and 1960 (BT 27) on the findmypast.co.uk website.
You may already have this ??
In all my searches it seems to point that the Ship may well have been a New Zealand one in 1930 from London.
the one that i think it may have been is the RMS Rangitane
This is just off the bat but is there a possibility thaT HE iMMIGRATED EARLIER THAN YOU THINK??
bUT MAY WELL BE ANOTHER PERSON ??
