Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
Hi, my great uncle Vivian Ernest Wade R324095 joined the Merchant Navy in 1944. I’ve found his Seaman’s pouch at the National archives and got a copy of the contents. The only ship mentioned is the Wallasey but I know he spent a number of years serving and would love to know how I can find out which other ships he served on and his position on those ships. He was a JOS on the Wallasey and I have a copy of his ID card reissued in 1952. I’m fairly certain he spent at least 20 years in the Merchant Navy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Pauline Pisters

Re: Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
Pauline if you have his discharge book as well as his number then his ships should be in that book. The Wallasey was also the name of a sea training school in the Liverpool area , and think that was also the name of one near Blyth in Northumberland. If there are no other discharges of ships in his book , there would be his pre sea training entered into the book. Do you actually have his discharge book ? That is what you want or a copy of such. JS...ps just realised the school at Blyth was the Wellesley and not as stated. JS

Re: Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately his discharge book wasn’t in his pouch scanned images. I had taken a guess that Wallasey refereed ro thr training school as he was 17 in 1944 when Wallasey was written in the ship section of one of the documents. He appears to have had to replace his ID card in 1952 and the original with photo wasn’t in his pouch. I was hoping there would be some other resource I could use to determine which ships he served on.
Regards,
Pauline

Hello Pauline
You will have to go back to the National Archives and look in the Series that covers his CRS10 Documents, these will have all his records including the list of Ships etc.
Possibly a Pic of when he joined as well. You can also if not possible to get there Apply online for his CRS10, it will cost though.
Cheers

Re: Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
In 1952 the green ID card was in vogue for most of us on this site, and still had photograph , fingerprints , scars, tattoos, and if unfortunate enough the marks of Cain inserted on. Today would be against your personal privacy. The Red ID card did not come out until the 60s unless anyone knows different. New discharge books were also introduced at a later date , which did not have in a place for a rubber stamp for Conduct and Ability, if you had good hearing you may have heard a resonant sigh of relief throughout the Industry. In the background however you might have heard a moan of discontent from the various Captain Blighs still sailing the Spanish Main. If you can make a list of what you have it will be easier for those who know more who can advise you better. Others have more knowledge on the subject of the path you should take. Re: Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
Interesting as it may be JS (Re the Green ID Cards) that does not really help the Lady in her quest for how to find a Ship.
As requested can you please try and stick to the Thread post!
It is so hard to keep asking people to adhere to this and its really quite a simple request!
No Umbridge meant
Thank You

7The green ID card had on info. The Red one didn’t and was still in use in 1952. It would also have his picture in as well as his fingerprints etc. it helps her to see when it was issued although even that should be on whatever card she has. I only saw your post advising her correctly after I sent the green card info. JS

Re: Hello and enquiry on how to find ships served on
I’ve just checked on the National archives website and they have now suspended all copying until May at the earliest but I will definitely try and get his CRS 10 documents as you have suggested. The file I had copied was a BT 372 file and contained a little info and a photo of my great uncle at 25 years old which was a great find as we had no idea what he looked like. I’m still getting my head around all the codes surrounding Merchant Navy files as I’m sure you’ve figured out! Thank you for you help.
