I attended Gravesend sea school in late 1956, I have or had not heard the term “peanuts” until I came on to this site, when did that start and why?

Well Bill, could it have anything to do with the food maybe.
If like the Vindi you would have been very lucky to get any nuts, the only ones we had were the human kind. LOL
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The term "Peanut" seems to have been lost with the passage of time. The one that seemed to make the most sense to me, which I heard was that. Once upon a time there was a peanut vendor who used to walk along the road to the sea school selling his wares and shouting "Peanuts" as he walked along and this is how it came about. Other refer it to Sweeney Todd the barber who used to cut all the hair in the early days, with people walking out with there heads looking like a peanut.

Hi Brian, there is a GSS Association with a newsletter so I suggest you contact David Svensen (newsletter editor) for full details. If it's permissible to add his e-mail address on this site I can give it to you even though I'm a "Vindi" boy. Regards, Phil.
