My Grandfather
Hi
I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this question. I will try anyway.
My Grandfather Sydney Montague Newman died at sea on 1st June 1921 at age 38yrs whilst Master of a ship named Singapore. My Grandmother never talked about him and I never asked her any questions, which I regret. Is there anywhere I can find out, of what he died and where at sea he would have been buried. Also if there are any details of his service I can find too.
I would be grateful for any help, please.
Yours Jill Jenner

Re: My Grandfather
So far no records but there were several Ships of that name ,at a wild guess i picked one Built 1895 belonging to the P&O Shipping Company which may be the one he was on.
There are Crew Lists for that Ship at Kew! Official Number 102400 so may be worth asking for a copy

The black hole in the records: 1858-1913
Between 1858 and the First World War the Merchant Navy did not keep registers of its seamen. This means that for these years the only record you are likely to find of an individual merchant seaman is his appearance in agreements and crew lists, for which you usually need to know the names of the ships he served on.
