Hello
Hi, I've just joined the group as part of my research into my father's career with the Merchant Navy. My dad was Cyril Cheshire and he served on various ships from the late 30s until the end of 1964, in roles from Ship's Cook up to Chief Steward. I'm trying to piece together his career and movements between these years and any help would be most appreciated. At the moment I have various documents that I printed out from a visit to the National Archives and I have used these to list the Ships that he sailed on. I can only remember going on one trip with him, probably in the early 60s, it was from Tilbury (I think) up to Liverpool. Although it was a lot of fun and very exciting I spent most of the time at sea either hanging over a bucket or the side of the ship, this probably explains my own career choices, I joined the Army and stayed on land.
For those that are interested here is what I have so far on Cyril's service record:
I have nothing until 1941, then with MOWT on Lodestone from ? until 10/41, Helmsprey 11/41 until 5/42, then Empire Ocean 7/42 until 8/42, then Fort Gibraltar 9/42 until 1/43, then Fort Dease Lake 3/43 until 7/43, then HMS (?) Lincoln Salvor 11/43 until 2/44, then Taigete (Anglo Saxon) 3/44 until 5/44, then Harmattan 6/44 until 7/44. Then after a spell on a CRS 50 he joined the GSNC and a name I can't quite make out but it could be Sammex from 2/45 until 7/46, Groningen 9/46 until 3/47, Hirondelle 5/47 until 7/47, Redstart 7/47 until 12/47, Ringdove 1/48 until 4/48, Stork 5/48 until 6/48, Ptarmigan 7/48 until 12/48 and 1/49 until 5/49, Heron 5/49 until 7/49, Sheldrake 8/49 until 5/50, back on Heron 5/50 until 11/50, Woodcock 11/10 until 2/52, Cormorant 3/52 until 5/54, Whitewing 5/54 until 1/55, Albatross 3/55 until 10/55, Falcon 11/55 until 1/56, back on Groningen 1/56 until 2/56, Grebe 2/56 until 3/56, back on Albatross for 3/56, then Auk 3/56 until 6/56, Woodlark 7/56 until 2/57, then Sheldrake 3/57 until 4/57, Royal Daffodil 5/57 until 9/57, then Teal 11/57 until 3/58, then Sheldrake 3/58 until 4/58, then Teal 4/58 until 11/58, then Woodlark 12/58 until 1/59. I think he then moved to Princes Line and Palestinian Prince 5/59 until 12/ 59, then Javanese Prince 1/60 until 4/61. Then a move to Crest Line London Ivan Ivanovich and Wavecrest 12/61 until 7/62, Blisworth 8/62 until 9/62, then Denson River 9/62 until 10/62 then a break before Orecrest from 5/64 until 10/64. After which he became a Publican, first in Shepards Bush then In Lavenham in Suffolk.

Re: Hello
Hello Steve.
Seems your father and I missed each other as I was an AB on the Albatross for 3-voyages from 8/54 to 12/54. She was a smallish ship of 2020 Gross Tons running between Tower Bridge and Med ports - Tower Bridge because she generally tied up on the Thames a short distance up-river from the bridge. On my final trip she ended up in Liverpool instead. I have good memories of this older coal burner as a very happy ship.
