    Default Dallington Court

I'm a new member to the site, and joined as I would like to find out more about my fathers service with the Merchant Navy. I understand he served on the Dallington Court during WWll I have very little information about him apart from his discharge number and a couple of photos. If there is anyone that can give me any information I would be grateful.

Thanks for your reply, His full name Arthur Ernest Holgate D.O.B 9/7/1923 Place of Birth 26 Howards Road Plaistow London E13 Discharge Number R255941 I know her served as a cook on the Dallington Court and that he was awarded the Africa Star. I would also like to find out what other service medals he had, if any. As I would like to obtain these to keep in the family archive. I know he had the medal ribbon, but I'm not sure if he ever had the medal(s). I have managed to obtain a record from the National Archives however this is only his name date of birth and discharge number followed by some numbers and letters which don't mean much to me. Any information you can give, or where I can find out more would be most appreciated

    Regards

    Hello Colin
The Medals in question are 1939/45 Medal --- Atlantic Star --- Africa Star --- War Medal --- and Clasp The above are depicted on his Medal Card.
    Cheers

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Africa_Star

Atlantic Clasp The clasp was struck in yellow copper zinc alloy and has a frame with an inside edge which resembles the perforated edge of a postage stamp. It is inscribed
    "ATLANTIC"
and was designed to be sewn onto the medal's ribbon. When the ribbon is worn alone, a silver rosette is worn on the ribbon bar to denote the award of the clasp

I will later get to his Seamans Pouch and CRS10 at this time seems that the Archives are having issues! those documents will hold a lot of information on his Service Record!
    Cheers

Qualifying details for the Merchant Navy.

    1. The recipient must first have earned the 1939-45 Star and there must have been a further six months service anywhere at sea between 3rd September, 1939, and 8th May, 1945. This must include service in the South Atlantic west of longitude 20 degrees east, Home Waters, and serving in the convoys to North Russia during the second period of the six months.
    2. For service afloat in fishing vessels and certain types of coastal craft recipients would not be awarded the Atlantic Star, although they were recognised for the 1939-45 Star.
    3. Prisoners of War would also qualify for the award, providing they had completed six months service for the 1939-45 Star and completed at least one voyage through the specified area

The clasp he was awarded was for the Africa Star, which means he took part in "Operation Torch" the invasion of North Africa in 1942.

His CRS-10 service file should be in the 1941 to 1972 Fifth Register of Merchant Seaman's Service. These records are held at The National Archives at Kew in classification BT 382. They are held in block by surname and each file holds the records of up to sixty individuals and would require a visit to Kew unless you want to pay their outrageous fees. His service file should be held in file “BT 382/800” covering the surnames ”Holden L to Holl M H” These file details include the following information: Name of seaman, Date and place of birth, Discharge (Seaman’s) book number, Rank, Details of the ships on which he served. These include: Name of ship and official number, date of engagement. Date of discharge whether ship was a foreign going of home trade vessel, and records in some cases National Insurance contributions. Details shown in these records are similar to those contained in an individual seaman's discharge book.
"Across the seas where the great waves grow, there are no fields for the poppies to grow, but its a place where Seamen sleep, died for their country, for you and for peace" (Billy McGee 2011)
