Hello from Glasgow
So glad I found this forum. I wasn't in the Merchant Navy myself, but my dad Jimmy Buchan from Kirkcaldy, Fife was. My dad died in 1993 and he used to regale me stories of his training days in 1945 and when he was a steward with the Harrison Line on the South Africa route. He left the service in August 1947 to resume his apprenticeship as a shipwright at Burntisland Shipyard. I just wish I had made some record of his tales to Durban, Cape Town and leave in Johannesburg etc., instead of trying to piece together fragments of information I have found from here and there.
