Default Was Lawrence on the ship

Hello I'm Susan and i know nothing about Merchant shipping. My Father-in-Law Lawrence Dudley Halcro Kitchen sailed on the Surat Which was torpedoed on the 6th MAY 1941.
Lawrence survived and i find him on the 4th June 1941 on the Anselm arriving in Liverpool from Durban. I have found the Anselm was also torpedoed on the 5th July 1941 but what i'm trying to find out is if Lawrence was on that ship and luckily survived a second time or when he arrived in Liverpool if he was assigned to another ship. Lawrence was born 4th December 1921 in East London. Can anyone advise me? Thanks.

When you obtain his CRS 10 it should confirm that he was aboard mv SURAT torpedoed and sunk by U-103 (Viktor Shutze) on 6th May 1941. After being torpedoed he was transported home on ANSELM as a DBS on a conveyance order leaving Freetown on May 10th and arriving in Liverpool 4th June 1941.

Yes he did survive the war as my husband was born in 1952. What i was trying to find out was if he was on the Anselm when it was torpedoed or was it likely
that when he got to Liverpool would he have left the Anselm and been put on another ship for some reason. As i said i know nothing of how the navy Royal or Merchant works.
But thank you for your replies.

Hi Susan , it is highly unlikely Lawrence was aboard Anselm when the ship was torpedoed. He came home on this ship as DBS , Distressed British Seaman. You say from Durban South Africa , Keith's research shows Freetown West Africa. Either way he would need time at home to rest and recover also he would have lost everything when Surat was torpedoed including his discharge book and certificates that he would need before shipping out again , it takes time for these to be replaced. You need to find the ship he joined after Surat , if that is he did go back to sea.
I hope one of our members can help in your search.

Thank you for your help. I said Durban because that's what it said on a document i found on Ancestry. He did go back to sea until the end of the War but don't know exactly when he was discharged.
From the help i've received i've learnt something and that's always good to have something new to add to the file on his life.
    Susan.
