RFA Black Ranger - Kenneth H Churchouse
Good morning and Happy New Year to one and all.
I am resarching my family history and have come across this site and hope someone is able to help please.
I currently have very little information apart from the title.
My uncle was Kenneth H Churchouse and I am told he was on the RFA Black Ranger when it was in Portland, Dorset although I do not have a year.
It may be a coincidence that I have traced a person with the same name who was in the New Zealand Navy, however I am not convinced I have the right person.
Finally I was told he was addressed as Captain and this is on his gravestone along with the letters MMSA after his name however, he may not actually have been a Captain!! Is anyone able to tell me what these letter stood for? All is very mysterious but also very intriguing and interesting.
If anyone can assist me in my research I would be very grateful.
Thank you.

#1... offhand MMSA is mercantile Maine service association otherwise going back to distant memories can remember other initials put before different licences such as CC before a masters licence. Why I never was inquisitive enough to question. Maybe others may know more. Regards JS.

Re: RFA Black Ranger - Kenneth H Churchouse
#1. Ref again to #1. Anyone I would imagine in the NZ Navy in charge of a vessel would be called Captain by persons on that vessel, it is the norm for any vessel. However Captain is a military rank, I assume you know how the naval commissioned ranks are. .. midshipman, sub lieutenant, lieutenant, lieutenent Commander, Commander, Captain, commodore, rear admiral, vice admiral, admiral of the fleet. JS.

Re: RFA Black Ranger - Kenneth H Churchouse
Found this at the NA his Medal Card hope this may help a wee but, will look into more later so now at least know DOB .
Medal listing of Churchouse, Kenneth Discharge number: R281872 Date of... | The National Archives
His CRS 10 Documents should be found in this Series at the NA as well.
However it will be far better if you can get there in person, you can try to request a copy online but have found it to be a real pain. You will need to ask only for his info ,as in the Series there are many other names,so you must quote as much info as you can when applying online.
Cheers and good luck
Churcher C H to Clancy W J | The National Archives

Re: RFA Black Ranger - Kenneth H Churchouse
Hello Doc,
Thank you for your suggestion.
His year of birth was, I believe 1925, however, I am not entirely sure where. I know he lived in Weymouth, Dorset and Eastleigh, Hampshire.
Hopefully this may help.
Thanks again
Anne
