Hello
Hi all,
I'm not sure if I'm in the right place, just looking to see if anyone can help me acquire more information of a relative who was in the navy during WW2.
I only found out today that he was on Esso Appalachee from Curacoa to New York.
If I'm in the wrong forum, please let me know.
Thanks

Re: Hello
Hi Jane,
you are in the right place,
Keep looking in some one will guide you.
You need his name and if possible date of birth or place and or death, his number if possible, but they are good here.
I was with ESSO but 50 years later.
Cheers
Brian

Re: Hello
Hi, thanks for the replies. Yes he was on the Empire Dickens 1942. Only info I have is that the ship set sail 18/8/1942 and arrived in New York 16/10/1942.
His name was Eurfyl George Jones, dob 7/3/1924 in St David's, Pembrokeshire. He was my mother's cousin and I was fortunate to have known him until he passed away in 2003. He was certainly a character, liked to go against the grain. But I have fond memories of him.
I know he signed up at the age of 15. My mum said he was a radio operator in Japanese waters? But the only info I've found is the passenger list for the Empire Dickens.
Thank you for pointing me to the National Archives website, I purchased the download for Eurfyl Jones, but have no idea what any of it means. Am I able to attach a screenshot of it in here?
Thank you

Re: Hello
The PDF seems to be for medal entitlement.
What do the records look like?
EG:
Medal record of Alfred Harry Badman, BT 395/1
The column on the right of each record contains a reference number to the entitlement file held by the Registry of Shipping and Seamen.
The following codes may be found on the record:
WM (War Medal)
AT (Atlantic Star)
1939 (1939-1945 Star)
AF (Africa Star)
PA (Pacific Star)
BU (Burma Star)
FR (France & Germany Star)
IT (Italy Star)
CL (Clasp)
OLE (Oak Leaf Emblem)
Markings found on the record may include:
a cross through a code, indicating that the medal was issued
a circle over a code, indicating that only the ribbon for that medal has been issued
a cross and a circle, indicating that both a medal and a ribbon have been issued
The letter ‘R’ over a code can signify that an application for that medal was reviewed and refused.
The link below will give a guide:

Keith.

Importantly, the PDF, not only confirms his full name and DOB
but also gives his Discharge book number:
Eurfyl George Jones
07/03/24
R203818
This will assist Doc, our site senior moderator and others that help
from the site team to help more.
Also both birth and death are recorded / registered as Haverfordwest.

Re: Hello
Hi Keith,
Are you able to see the attachment?
That's all I found on the National Archives website. Should there be more information?
From the information you have provided it shows a circle and cross for each of the following; 1939, War Medal, Pacific, Clasp. There is 'R' for Italy. It states his discharge number as R203818. Ref BT 395/1/50460.
Please forgive my ignorance, this is all new to me.
This is all I found on the NA website, does this mean there are no more records for him?
I'm curious to know where he had been for the 3 years prior to being on the Empire Dickens.
Regards
Jane

Re: Hello
You are doing well, your pdf both opens and is readable.
The record you have is to do with his medals and his discharge number will
assist to find more. The discharge book is in away his personal Maritime passport
and would contain personal details, a photo etc, esp detailing his ships / voyages /
dates etc.
His Discharge number is personal to him and will assist in hopefully, finding more
of his records.
The team on site here all have or use differing resources. I would hope that Doc our
Senior moderator or another that has better access and understanding of the archives
will be with you soon.
I will look further myself and add more as found here ASAP.
Regards,
Keith.
