    Default Death at sea

Hi, so pleased to be a part of this site. No Merchant or Royal Navy history myself but lots of my relatives did have and I wish to learn how to discover more of their lives at sea as part of my family tree research. My first request for advice is a bit vague, but concerns a distant relative whose headstone notes he died aged 15 at sea on a passage from Calcutta to London. He was from Wales and a poor family so my only guess was he was a boy in Merchant or Royal Navy. He either got ill in Calcutta or as part of a routine return trip. Any advice on how I can test out this theory would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Laurence

The first thing anyone is going to ask Wayne is his name D.O.B. And D.O. D. And any other information you may have on the subject. Hope you achieve your aims, and welcome to the site. Regards JS.

Hi Keith, thanks for replying. The headstone is in Crickhowell in Breconshire. The boy was from a fairly wealthy family so he could have been supported to be in the service by his Father. It is not necessarily important but geographically i guess Newport or Cardiff would be nearest to him in terms of a large port. Researching family trees can be obsessive and it's about sorting out all the loose ends and respecting all those who contributed something to the services. Thanks again. Laurence

Sorry Keith, trying to get used this forum layout. William Thomas Morgan, born 1843 in Crickhowell, possibly Llangattock and said to have died 31st May 1859. Crickhowell was part of Breconshire in those days. Father was Henry Morgan. Thanks. Laurence

Hopefully, our Senior Moderator (Doc) will have enough info now to begin a search through the Listing of Deaths at Sea on merchant Seaman.

I will also continue searching for more.

    Regards,

    Keith.

Hi Keith, thanks for this. I do use Ancestry and Family Search as well as the Forces site as well, but I do seem to struggle sometimes particularly on the Forces site of knowing if I have the right person or not so what you have supplied is really useful. All of this information will go into our family tree with acknowledgements to you and the forum. Thanks. Wayne
