Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
Sorry for my typo. He went to work in UK at age 16 or 17, in 1936 or 1937, right before the war. And, yes, he was born in 1920.

Sorry, as I noted in response to Vernon, the dates he went to UK were 1936 or 1937. Yes, Ireland was independent then.

Thank you, Keith.

No worries, getting a bit late here now, will take a fresh look at all in the morning.

Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
to Thus far all I come up with is this ??

Above relates to
James |
Gormanly |

Blaydon U.D. |
Durham |
England |

Louise
Can you perhaps upload that Card! It may just help ?
Cheers
I have an identity card issued by Captain of Port (New York)
Added
On a bit of research that could well just have been a Card for Travel Purposes within the USA ,however if he was at Sae he should have had his Seamans ID Card which should have allowed him short stays in the USA ??
Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
As mentioned soon, an early night.
In all must add it is often found that the dates can differ, as to date of birth and date of registered birth.
Also Irish records, many would not have known, own date of birth, most were estimated. Even Irish names were Anglasised - to English sounding name to the recording clerk.
Sailors record details / dates often are incorrect as they did not know or even told white lies to go to sea etc.
All in all we look at given info and look at all aspects, setting the scenario - we know nothing.
Working with you, we are learning, with hopes to achieve your objective.
Bear with us.
K.

I posted card, front and back. It should show up further in thread. Haven't quite mastered the mechanics of this site down yet!
Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
That is a Permanent Residency Alien Card ,so looks as if he lived in the USA for whatever Period Its a Green Card (called that)
GREEN CARD. Alien registration receipt cards, colloquially called "green cards," are issued to aliens who qualify as lawful permanent residents as proof of their status. The 2002 version of the card was actually light pink in color
,possibly also that colour long before.
The card serves as a permit for employment in the United States and a visa. Permanent residents may use the card to return to the United States after a temporary absence not exceeding one year.
Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
Yes he seems to have worked in the USA and lived there for a period of time .
United States Federal Census 1940's
Name |
John Gormanly |
Birth |
Ireland |
Residence |
Westwood Judicial Township, Westwood, Lassen, California, USA |
PS They just give a House Number with above of Number 13 ??
Alien numbers have either eight or nine digits, and similar to a Social Security number, once a person receives one, he has it for life. The alien registration program was initiated in 1940 to keep track of every person in the United States who was not a citizen. At the time, the law was implemented in the interests of national security, and it also mandated that the Immigration and Naturalization Service register and fingerprint all aliens at least 14 years of age who were either presently in the country or who were entering the country.
Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
Ok So what we have of course all on supersition is
Born in 1920
Went to London for work 1936/37
As there are no MN Records thus far seems he worked in some other Capacity somewhere in London?
Immigrated to the USA IN 1944 as per the ID Card shown.
Possibly once there he may have joined the Merchant marine ?
Don't know how long he stayed but again just supersition
he may have returned later to the UK and then joined the British Merchant Navy
and was still employed at Sea till after 1972 that would explain no records found thus far?
Records ceased to be kept after 1972.
If he did there is the possibility that his Records may be in BT382 Filed in Blocks by name.
That is all I can come up with so far!
Cheers
Just one more Avenue that may be of interest is this Link, but one will have to go in Person to the Reading Room or Pay a price for research. As said a possibility
