You must have a job that would be a bit hair raising at times, as John says in the old days it was flags, and of course horns in fog. I was on a ship carrying iron ore to Rotterdam in the early 50s, thick fog and being on lookout on the forecastle was no joy, could hear this deep booming noise` then the Queen Mary appeared doing around 25 knots, she was Ok she had radar; we didn't and could have turned into her path in panic, shades of Capt Smith.

Guess like any thing else early days takes a while to learn the basics,
I would imagine the role of Coast guard is or becomes more intense than say
the volunteer Coast watch. Hope to assist you, some how yet, intrigued and
guess we will learn much from you hopefully.

The thing I can’t see as of yet is as the Coastguard has taken over the duties of the BOT, MOT, and DTI. Then there must be different departments to such. You can’t have operators of the separation zones examining people for certs. This was always done by people who had served in those positions. Where have all the examiners gone, long time passing, words to a song!! JWS

the maritime and coastguard agency is my employer and they have many departments hm Coastguard being one of them

We have many months of training and I’m half way through, so far I have passed everything but I’m enjoying it.

James, welcome to the best site of its kind anywhere.

It will be somewhat refreshing for the members to get an up to date account of how it works now.
Most of us are old school when it was a very different time.

Hi James, Your quite correct regarding seaman crewing British vessels in any conflict that had nothing to do with G,B, As Ivan has quite rightly pointed out i was caught up in the 1971 Indian/ Pakistan conflict i received no recognition from any M.O.D. Yet for supplying British armed forces in Aden and later on in Belize the M.O.D. Gave me the M.N. War vets badge. Another day another dollar mate. Regards great to have you aboard Terry. :thumbsup:

Des, maybe the mixture of radar and fog create false confidences, we had radar on the Hudson Firth and i'm sure the Loch Ryan was using hers as well, but we sure managed to create some serious damage to each other.
