    Default Hello

Hi Im Liz and I am researching my grandfather Herbert Daniel Humphries who was a radio operator on ships at various times in his life. He was born in 1886 and I know he was on the Penhale in 1949 when I was born as my parents had a telegram from him while on the ship to congratulate them on my birth. Also I cant find him in the 1911 census though I can find his heavily pregnant wife alone, so I imagine he is on a ship at this time. His number was 650560 if this may be useful.
Any pointers how I can continue will be appreciated. thanks

So he was on the Lowland and the Dewsbury besides the one you mention. If he was any others they dont show here. ?? But i see a CRS154 was issued
CRS 154 Seaman to whom a British seaman’s identity card has been issued (or re-issued) I also see a CRS170 issued but not too sure on this possibly refers to a Second Discharge Book as well, taking into account his age then must have been about 66 or thereabouts. As above are CR1 Docs there may also still be CRS10 or CR10 Docs somewhere ?? This can only be verified if applying to see if they do exist ??

If there is a CRS10 for him then it should be found in the Following Series

The last Document here as it would not load on previous page (Site restricts to 5 Images)

So to Sum up looks like he joined up possibly at a Young age, then served for quite some time. Possibly then leaving for a spell before again Re Joining , as his Service was current in 1953. The reason for the Re Issue of Seamans ID Card etc.
This seems to tally with his Records so far.
There must have been quite a few more Ships he was on,but there is as yet no mention of others ,only what is shown.
I would hazard a guess and say that it would be an idea to contact the Souithampton Archives (Seamans Records) and ask them if his Original Records still exist there.
Other than that hopefully his CRS10 may come to light once you apply for it
    Cheers

Dear Liz - we only really have access here to names of fallen Danish sailors who served on Allied ships in World War Two, given the name of your grandfather I am not sure whether he is in that category. The names we do have are found in the book of the fallen, kept at the memorial in Newcastle's St Nicholas Cathedral, I am not sure that we have a list of ship's names (and since the Penhale was clearly afloat in 1949, it is not likely that we have any useful information. Best wishes Hans Christian
