Hello
Thank you for registering me on your site. I am not and have never been in the navy, however I am interested in finding out more information about my Grandfather Arthur Edmund McAlhone who was in the merchant navy around the time leading up to and after the first world war.
He mainly served around the Persian Gulf.
Some of the ships he sailed on were the SS Ferrara, the SS British Architect and the SS British Major. I believe that he was the Captain of the Architect & the Major.
Hopefully I may be able to find out more through your site.

The SS Ferrara bore the distinction of being the first ocean-going vessel to be owned by the. Anglo-Persian Oil Company (APOC), LATER , B.P. when she was purchased in .1912
built IN 1880..

British Major 1913 built. 4,147 tons, Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Co, Newcastle ex Roumanian Prince acquired 1918. Sold to Italy 1929 and renamed Riva Sicular. Scrapped in 1933.[13]
British Architect 1922 built . 7,388 tons, Blythswood Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Glasgow Scrapped in 1953.

A bit of info already supplied by Marian may ne a good start however can you give us a Date Of Birth and place which will confirm if the info given is correct!
By the looks of it though seems to fit in!

There are Two other Ships that may fit as well,if he was Born in North Shields
they are the City of Florence states he was Able Seaman and Quatermaster on her at age 19 and the Holgate! States only Sailor aged 20 But will await your reply!
