Re: Beautiful Port Line Ships
Hi Richard.
In your post #25 in the first picture the lad in the middle was his name Johnny Holmes? he looks just like a bloke I sailed with on the NZ coast, I know he was a steward at one time then changed over to the deck.
Cheers Des

Re: Beautiful Port Line Ships
Hi Roger,
Yes, that was it. We are all stewards from the old Port Dunedin mid 1950 and 'all dressed up like pox doctors' clerks' - now that's and old saying I just recalled - and like you and Keith dancing was more like Fred Austere. It certainly didn't attract any returns. Don't remember the Trades Hall though. The following year, 1951 I was in Auckland on the Gothic and were swinging on the anchor off Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf for a few weeks in the big National Dock Strike and got a tender in to Queen Street wharf quite a few time and had some good times.
Fateful trip that. In Wellington I went for my first drivers license and you know what the hills are like there. Told to pull over and park on this almost vertical piece of road which was OK but the brake, the clutch, the accelerator and my feet somehow got mixed up. By some miracle from rolling backwards to imitating a kangaroo I got going up the hill. The startled examiner gave me a license just in case he got me if I had to go back. Few days later I had my tonsils out - a botched job that put me into Greenwich Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital and for a couple of weeks. had a date with a lovely nurse and we went up to Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
They were indeed happy days Roger, couldn't knock the grins off our faces with a stick.
Richard

Re: Beautiful Port Line Ships
The Ford and GM Holden cars only found here in Oz and often developed for our climate and conditions.
One of the reasons they are no longer produced here, none or little overseas liking for them.
The cars from overseas became available and slowly sales of local made waned, now no more.
But back to the original thread.
Port and City line ships so often in Cape Town the same time as us.
\Always considered them to be such good looking ships with such slender lines, clean looking and inviting.
And Roger, fear not for your lack of dancing skill, you were not Adam on that one.
My skills were once described by a 'lady' as resembling a squid attempting to get away from a shark. One other asked me if I had been taught by Blind Freddy?.

Re: Beautiful Port Line Ships
I recall one overnight stop in Hobart in the 60's. I can't remember what ship, but we later heard of a big fire the day after we left. Never did know if there was any truth in this.
Can anyone enlighten me after all this time?.

Re: Beautiful Port Line Ships
Like the rest of our once proud M.N. The ships sailed one by one and never returned, Containerization played its part of course, What i found with the Port boats was they where easily distinguishable, Not just because of there colors but i remember the Port Chalmers you have seen one you have seen them all happy days of a bygone era lads Terry.
