Dave Newton
Hi. I joined the MN in 1964 as a galley boy, my first ship was Mv North Devon a tramp steamer sailing out of Manchester Docks on the 17/12/64. After serving 5 years I was discharged from the shipping federation in Salford, and I have not seen my discharge book since. My last ship was Mv Escalante, Royal Mail line, in September 1968. I would like any help or advice on finding my discharge book, other ships I sailed on, Mv Photinia Stag line, Mv Caxton, Mv Naess Trader, Mv Eluthera. Mv Kingsnorth Fisher etc.

A few more I couldn't resist including Photinia as a cable-layer.
I like the one of North Devon alongside with the general public walking about. No 'Elf & Safety or yellow jackets and bone-domes in them days!

Re: Dave Newton
Gulliver I have faint recollections of meeting an ex master off I believe one of the Fisher ships. He had been employed in carrying nuclear wastes I believe from Japan, to somewhere in the UK. this would probably have been in the 70"s. When I saw the name Kingsnorth Fisher it struck a bell and thought that might be it until I saw she was a heavy lift and Ro Ro vessel. Was there one of the Fisher ships employed in that trade. Cheer JS

John,I'm sure there are others here who can tell you more, but in the early 60's James Fisher & Sons won the contract to transport irradiated nuclear waste ( fuel (rods) from Workington(the port for Sellafield) to Japan,in flasks within her holds.I believe the first one was the 1962 built 1,540 grt coaster LEVEN FISHER,converted in 1965.The two round voyages per annum went via Panama, with bunkering/storing in Honolulu. Later on came the larger 3,044 grt PACIFIC FISHER,ex German vessel(JOPULP) built in 1966 and converted in 1970.She was scrapped at Cairnryan in 1985,but there were others after, although not sure if James Fisher still has the contract.

Re: Dave Newton
James Fisher did have a vessel carrying Nuclear Waste for processing, I forget what the name was. , I believe the POOL FISHER that sank in heavy weather in November 1979 did a couple of trips out there before they got a specialist ship.
