I checked Ebb and Flow by Roy Martin and the ship is not mentioned in the Operation Neptune section but is mentioned in ConvoyWeb
ConvoyWeb
There is a mistake there however as it is mentioned as LAPLAND built in 1936 but we know she was lost in 1941.

Hi Stefan.
You may have this information. Empire Guidon was sunk by U-504, Captain Hans-George Friedrich Poske 31 Oct 1942 off Durban.
The U-504 was herself sunk off Cape Ortegal Spain on 30 July 1943, she was depth charged by HMS Kite, Woodpecker, Wren, and Wild Goose, she went down with all 53 hands.
Your Granddad's name is recorded on the U-Boat web site as one of the men on Empire Guidon.
Cheers Des

QUOTE "Also don’t know anything about the Whitley or Leeds?"
LEEDS : The Miramar Ship Index does not list any merchant vessels of that name within our timespan,so I suggest possibly she just might be the s.s.LEEDS CITY.
of the well-known Reardon Smith Line. s.s.LEEDS CITY O.N. 148831 Cargo ship 4749 grt built 1927. Took part in many convoys, was sold to the Japanese in 1951 and as the TERUSHIMA MARU was wrecked on 20/8/52 outbound on the River Hooghly with coal from Calcutta to Japan.
Perhaps one shouldn't feel too sentimental about ships(although many of us do !) but I can't help feeling that at the grand old ship age of 25 and after a strenuous life surviving many convoys and doing her 'bit' for Great Britain, that her heart just gave out and she just wanted a long rest.....even if it was to be a dirty Indian river rather than a tranquil palm-fringed blue lagoon.
So even if this is not the Leeds referred to in the thread it's still a nice tribute! :icon_violin:
Thanks Doc! Great information:)
Don't know if any of these may be the Leeds as there is no info at the site just Pics!
Cheers
