    Default S.S. Appledore

    Hi Everyone,

Just found the site after trying to find some information on a ship my Dad sailed on in the late forties, the S.S. Appledore. I have just returned from a week spent in Appledore, Devon and visited the Maritime Museum while I was there, but found nothing. Although an archivist who wasn't there on the day I visited telephoned me and has said he could supply some information after doing some research. I will be following that up.

I do have a black & white photo of the S.S. Appledore when in port at Venice in 1947, which when I scan it in I'll try and upload it on the site.

My Dad passed away in 2006 but I know he was fond of his time on that ship, his name was Bill Jones from Liverpool (one of many I'm sure!).

It would be great if anybody could help me find any information on the ship or crew.

    Many thanks,

    Alan Jones

    Hello Alan
Thanks for the query, and I hope that you will be able to get more info soon!
Just a question here ,you have his Surname as Jones ? And Yours as Joness ? Is that perhaps just a Spelling error. What Year was you Dad Born~ And if we are looking for info on him is it Jones or Joness?
    Thanks for joining !
    Cheers

    CONVOY HX 90 - Page 2
    Commodore, Commander V. P. Alleyne's Reports

    Sunday, Nov. 24
S.S. British Prince sent to Sydney, cargo shifted. S.S. Appledore missing. Made junction with Bermuda Section, 22 ships, S.S. Solstad (Norwegian) missing.

    Monday, Nov. 25
All present, S.S. Appledore in sight 8 miles astern, rejoined at noon. Reorganising and renumbering of convoy very difficult owing to Bermuda Section not knowing H.E.
During night blew a gale from S.E. and ship rolling very heavily.

    Hello Alan,
I have been researching my maternal grandfather - Ernest Womack. Not much was known about him as he disappeared around 1949/1950
I now know that he served on board SS Appledore from June 1948 to Feb 1949. He deserted the ship at Newcastle New South Wales, Australia. He was never heard of again after that!!
I have obtained from The National Archives the Crew Agreements and Log Book for SS Appledore covering 1948 - 1950.
If you can give me your Dad's full name, date of birth, wife's name and the home address he had in the late 1940s, I may be able to find him in the crew records.
I would love to see the photo you have of SS Appledore.
    Best Wishes
    David McAsey

    Dear All,
I have just joined the site and very interested to read the threads on SS Appledore. I am researching my father Donald C Taylor who is shown to be on Appldore between August and Nov 1949 and left the ship in Adelaide Victoria. I am researching his life as he died when I was two so very interested to know what he was doing in Australia between 1947-53 before travelling back to Liverpool and then marrying my mother in 1956.
I know from his CRS10 and seaman's pouch that he also served on the Brit Baron based around Brisbane in 1947, but other than that I don't have any other information on the 6 years.
On his return to Liverpool he then sailed on Patroclus from 1953 until his death in Nov 1960.
Grateful for any information that anyone can provide any information. Thanks David Taylor

This would be his Pouch as you have it, and as you say his CRS10 will also be at the Archives!
Possibly just a thought is to get the Crew Lists from Canada, if they are there as this has a lot of info on them, it may just fill in some gaps!??
