Hi John good guess I am indeed in the Haltwhistle area. With regard to redundancy pavements they were in every instance the basic the companies could get away with the robbing bar-stewards :-(

Although cant hear the Northumbrian twang, Hadrians wall was a good giveaway. The wifes cousins reside in Haltwhistle and have the ladies shop there, used to have the Gents shop also, but went into carpets instead. Know there were a couple or three went to sea from there as was told by one of the girls in the shop. If from Hexham however knew a few more from that area, if still alive 2 of them would be just barely the third like me probably already has the craft disease. Theres a bloke on here called Cappy he knows all the dives around the Tynes waterfront also in other parts of the world. Is hard to understand though as he is a Geordie and know you as a Northumbrian speak the Queens English, which is not quite Scottish. However these days pretends he"s a yorkshireman. John I was actually born a Geordie in North Shields, my first wife was a Sand-dancer and I lived in South Shields for a few years. Lived out in the styx now 35 years.

# 14.My wife was born in Newcastle but brought up in Gateshead, however I took her out of it and brought her up in Whitley Bay, keep on telling her I took her out of a bad life. North Shields lived there for a short time at the end of the war with an Aunt at the top of Howard street. Cappy used to sneak across and try and pinch kippers off the trawlers, only found out in later life you had to smoke the herring first, hope your retirement goes ok. The first 10 years are the worse. Stewart you will of course remember the old Lloyds hailing station between the fish quay and the ferry landing, have put on here before but think most don't believe. There used to be a regular runner from Poland which went up to Jarrow to load timber for telephone poles. Came in one evening in dense fog and the hailing station shouted up by megaphone what ship and would of asked where bound when got the reply normally. However the reply came through the fog Anna , this perturbed the caller so he tried again what ship, and again the answer Anna, he tried once again with the same results and was getting quite annoyed by this time so shouted back ah nah e nah but I wanna nah anah. Think he was from South Shields. If you ever asked a person from S Shields where shallots came from, ten to one the answer would be the slot machine, Cappy has been warned now was going to ask him when next saw. Cheers JS

And a grand part of the world to boot. All my family originated there, Sunderland, Newcastle, Bolden, Sheilds.

Actually driving down to the North Shields ferry tomorrow via fish and chips at the "Fryery beside the Priory" (Marshalls) at Tynemouth the best in the area. Son in law is bringing our almost 3 year old grand-daughter over on the ferry, we then have the pleasure of her company till Tuesday when we have to take her back :-(. Gives her parents a chance to prepare for Christmas as both work.

Normally we drive across to So Shields but the horrendous delays on the Western Bypass whilst road widening works continue has forced us to adopt another transfer strategy! Of course the Tyne Tunnel and Tyne Bridge are also now manic as everyone avoids the bypass works.
