Tarpaulin Officers
Tarpaulin Officers?,recently read,qualified deck officers were known as tarpaulin officers as they had
come from the lower deck and were not part of the so called gentry,what a lot of bloody snobs.
Another fact the name Jack Tar was from tarpaulin

Yes Cappy like you I thought about the tarred pig tails untill recently reading about the Tar in
Tarpaulins,must be someone who can confirm the truth.
Another thing regarding the the RN and snobbery going back to the sixties,if you were a officer
who came from the lower deck they wanted you to have different buttons on your uniform.
This request was turned down.
