I have come across some of the "Modern " style engineers , and they scare me , there are a few signs that you can tell them by ,

Hello I am an engineer , I got a 2:2 from Newcastle in Thermodynamics , ( I thought a 2:2 was an Anglican Bishop from South Africa or a frilly dress worn by ballet dancers and extreme cross dressers )

Feel free to add more , all those I have met , Book educated Asian engineers who are frankly clueless and could not tell the difference between a Tab Nab and a Hammer , great with exams but the practicaaal knowledge of a snowman

As regards my early years at sea it was the contention on most ships that one got a masters job when one was not able to get around the ship as a younger more active person, and was given more or less for good service. Nowadays that is gone by the board and if you dont take your share of heaving on the tackle and making up the number there is no place for you. Gone are the days when a master had the social graces and experience to run a ship. On the average cargo vessel the 2nd. Engineer and the mate ran the two departments and was rare to see the Master or Chief Engineer interfere, if they did you were probably on your way out. To me anyone wanting to adhere to the old ways nowadays is wasting their time and might as well pack in before ever starting. JS

Obviously they have not met with our Den, he uses a hammer to crack his tab nabs I believe.

John the difference between Tab Nab and hammer is one is as hard as Iron and you can knock nails in with it , the other is a hammer

Hi shipmates, on the same topic? I was talking to a young lady today, Who was at sea 7 years in The Royal navy, She had a good time on many ships but quit to get married , {Big mistake} her husband did not do any time in any service but hates the fact that his wife DID???? and he made here get rid of all her uniform and some of her royal navy stuff, she gave me her hat badge. Why would her husband do that? he is very stupid, what she did a few year ago, before they met was none of his business, She is a very nice person, very smart and good looking, but not some kind of easy good time girl, I will see her again next week ,hopefully she is good company. my sliver M.N. badge still has the magic .

That is because he is jealous that she has done more than he has, Most shore people do that

That is a little sad mate and maybe she would do better to get rid of him rather than all her memorabilia!

When my daughter was about 20 she used to hang around with a group of girls one of whom was going out with an aspiring ships mate. By then trips were about 3 to 4 months, she used to come to the wife for advice and could not understand how I used to sometimes disappear for longer periods, as she was doubtful she would allow her maybe future husband to go away unless she was with him. My wifes answer was always "I knew what I was Marrying when I married him", this particular couple did get married but he had to give up his sea career, that is also sad to me. I rather think more marriages broke up with seamen because of the absence which a lot of women could not bear. Some of us were very lucky having been able to have two mistresses so to speak, one we made legal, the other a floating piece of steel. JS

Many seamen had two lives, one at home and the other at sea. Unfortunately many of their wives also had the same and this would put any relationship under considerable pressure. JM

That is right, JM.
When I use to arrive home after five months away , I was in the way, she had her own social life. with people I didn't even know.
eventually she cleared the house of all my furniture and ran off with a shore fella.
She died last May, but the fella still has some of my furniture in the house. don't want it back tho`.
