Hello and WW1 help
Hi all. Hope I've posted this in the right spot.
This looks like an interesting site and I was hoping I’d be able to get some information from you all, but first my name is Donald ( Don ) Power, born in, and sailed out of South Shields. I’ve lived in Australia since 1970 where for the last 10 years I’ve been doing my family history hence the interest in my father’s early seafaring life, his name Joseph I Power. His first trip to sea in 1917 was at the age of 15 years aboard the collier SS Trevose. On the 18th March the ship was torpedoed and sunk about 300 miles west of Scilly, later that day they were picked up by the Alnwick Castle. The following day 19th the Alnwick Castle was torpedoed by the same U boat and sunk, six lifeboats were launched, some made it to Spain and some were picked up by the SS Venezia. My father was in one of the boats that made it to Spain I’m pretty sure. We had a newspaper with the story in it but that was removed from my mother’s house about 30 years ago, so to tie my father’s name to the Trevose a crew list would be very handy also any other information on the fate of the boats. Does anyone know where a crew list can be purchased?
Thanks for the answers to my crew list. To Des who was on the RFA Wave Baron, I joined it in the Tyne in 1957. Picked up fuel oil and sailed out to the Pacific where Britain and USA were conducting their H Bomb tests . We didn’t get to see a test , the powers that be sent us off to Fiji for a couple of weeks. I must say the six months we were fuelling the navy out there was one of the most interesting of all my sea experience. If anyone is interested in looking at this here in a site http://www.janeresture.com/christmas_bombs/ or Google “ Christmas Island H bomb tests “. Also for anyone who might have had family stationed out there the ship Dunera came out and I think it was taking servicemen back to UK.
Regards Don

Re: Hello and WW1 help
Hi Don, You will probably get a welcome and reply to your query later. See you are just under 2 years older than me and say you sailed out of the Tyne. I was 11 years with Runcimans and about 4 with Dalgliesh, 2 old fashioned and hungry Geordie Companies. Cappy on this site still gets into South Shields quite often as he was born and bred there. Myself came from across the River. What ships were you on out of the Tyne and assume you were on the Shields Federation books. Regards John Sabourn

Re: Hello and WW1 help
Hi John.
I've put my ship list in the Crew list section. All the ships except one I joined in the Tyne. The exception was the Hyrcania which I joined in Amsterdam
and yes I was on the South Shields Federation books. Don

Hello Don and welcome.
The 1917 crew agreements for TREVOSE official number 104673 are held at Kew in piece BT 99/3304
You would need to ask for the last crew agreement before sunk for TREVOSE official number 104673.

Hugh

Don,
Was he born in Newcastle 30th January 1902. If so I have a photograph of him.

Re: Hello and WW1 help
Imagine the birth as DeepSea mentions 30th January 1902 is correct, the date I have is more likely the date of registration. K
