    Default family

My father George McLeod born 1918 was on the convoys after his medical discharge from army after Dunkirk. He has passed away, but I would like to get his convoy medal, how do I track his crew membership??????

    Default McLeod

As I sailed with 4 or 5 Mcleods during my time at sea, and as usual most were called Murdo, was wondering if yourself or Father was one of them, all were from Stornoway. The Companys they were with were or ships as I remember were the Finnish Wasa, Maratha Envoy, the other companys Seaforth Maritime Ltd. Nomis Shipping, Seaboard Offshore, Vector Offshore. Best Regards John Sabourn

Hi and a warm welcome to the site William. I guess the first and most obvious question is do you have any of his old Merchant Navy paperwork such as his Discharge Book? Also did he have any other christian names by which he might have been registered?

Welcome William, I'm sure you will find pleasure and enjoyment here. I also have no doubt your search for information will be answered in no time at all. There's more sleuths on this site than on the BBC or Granada . . .and they're good at it ! Keep well, regards John

    Default RSS Cardiff ???

    Hello William
I really dont know to much about this but have come across this letter and possibly it may assist you in your search
    Regards
    Doc

I work at the Registry of Shipping and Seamen (RSS) in Cardiff and we have received several enquiries today about the application process for the Arctic Convoy Star. I thought it would be worthwhile responding to your 'post' to expand on the information already provided by you to assist our veterans with the process.

RSS has the responsibility for issuing World War II campaign medals to Merchant Navy veterans only. Application forms for the Arctic Convoy Star can be downloaded from www.veterans-uk.info. Applications will be handled by both the MOD Medal Office and RSS, depending on whether an individual has already been issued with the Arctic Emblem.

Records relating to the issue of the Arctic Emblem are held by the MOD Medal Office. For this reason they will handle applications from ALL recipients (Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and the Merchant Navy) of the Arctic Emblem for the Arctic Convoy Medal.

If Merchant Navy veterans have already been issued with their World War II campaign medals and are requesting a re-assessment for the new Arctic Convoy medal then they should apply to Cardiff. Similarly, if the application is for the first issue of World War II medals for Merchant Navy service, the Arctic Convoy Star will now be a normal part of the assessment process and again, applications should come to Cardiff.

Any veterans of the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force should apply to The MOD Medal Office, Imjin Barracks, Innsworth, Gloucester, GL3 1HW. The MOD have a local rate helpline: 08457 800 900. THe contact details for RSS have been helpfully provided in your 'post'.

I hope that this enables all veterans to direct their applications in the right area. I understand that with new procedures it can be tricky at the start to get things moving in the right direction.

    Kind regards
    Denise

PS I am sure in a while Hugh will be able to assist more! He is a mind on info on these things!
    Cheers
