when i was younger I had a friend whoes father was on the Alert, ( cable layer) I think i am right in saying that it was sunk? the friends fathers name was "Booker" ( cannot remember the first name), the story goes he died when the ship was attacked and went down. would this have been the Alert you were on?

    Smile Alert

I recall the Alert during forties/fifties period she used to anchor a lot in the Thames at Erith. Painted grey and obviously a PO cable layer, did hear stories of her being engaged on trans atlantic phone cables.
Of course there was also Royal Naval ship with same name but dont know dates or details.

    Hi Eric.
I sailed on British Might as A/S two trips fromMay 1948 to March 1949, few weeks in drydock Falmouth between the two voyages which was best part of it. Abadan was favourite port for BTC in those days right up Persian Gilf (no A/C either).
Also sailed on Empire Mac Kendrick, again as A/S but that was 1956 but she had been renamed La Cumbre of Buries Markes. In officers saloon was a pictture of her as Empire MacKendrick as a merchant aircraft carrier with catapult on bows to launch Hurricane.
I am younger than you only 81 but joined RMB as boy in 1945 so had some military service too 45-47 but stayed at sea1947 to 1977
